We're looking for dance music recommendations!
We've listed some of our favourite places and activities below! More ideas can be found at Extraordinary Yellowknife.
Zehabesha
We heartily recommend this Ethiopian restaurant in downtown Yellowknife! This is our favourite place to eat lunch, hands down. Try the vegan platter with extra injera, and Ethiopian coffee.
Masala Kingdom
This is a good go-to for take out. It has a strong selection of western and traditional Indian cuisine.
Copperhouse
This is Yellowknife's "fancy" restaurant, located up-town. They can accommodate most dietary restrictions and have lots of good food.
Woodyard Brewhouse
This is Yellowknife's only local brewery. It has local beers on-tap and a good selection of food options.
Wildcat Café
The oldest restaurant in Yellowknife! It is currently being run by chef Niki Mckenzie.
Farmer's Market
The Market is every Tuesday and should not be missed! It's located in the Civic Plaza, next to City Hall and runs from 5:15pm until 7pm. You can expect live music, food trucks, and vendors selling fresh produce, prepared foods, and handmade goods.
Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre
Aka, the "museum". There are plenty of great exhibits about our local wildlife, the history of the city and the north, and the Yellowknives Dene. You can walk here from downtown, along the Frame Lake Trail. After the museum, we recommend continuing on to visit the NWT Legislative Assembly - free tours start at 10:30am and 2pm every weekday.
In-town walking trails
There are plenty of trails around town! The Niven Lake trail is fairly short, it is accessible and great for birdwatching. The Frame Lake trail is located in the centre of the city, it is partially paved and takes about an hour. Tin Can Hill has numerous trails and offers wonderful views of the big lake, you're also guaranteed to run into friendly dogs.
Out-of-town hiking trails
There are plenty of great hikes and views along the Ingraham Trail! We recommend Rainy Hill for a fairly short hike near town, where you'll get views of Yellowknife's skyline. The Cameron Falls trail is a classic, and the Cameron River Ramparts are equally beautiful. For something longer, try the Big Hill Lake trail.
Kayaking and Canoeing
June means open water, which is the season for getting out on a boat! You can rent canoes or kayaks from Narwal Northern Adventures and Jack Pine Paddle, or, ask us! We can probably find you a boat.
Weaver and Devore
A tourist stop and go-to place for buying outdoor gear. The clothing is located upstairs, accessed from behind the cash register area.
Down to Earth Gallery
We think this is the best place in town to buy gifts and souvenirs. It is packed with a huge array of art, pottery, jewellery, and other great items from local artists and businesses.
Fireweed Studio
This tiny store sells locally-made pottery and art. It is a small wooden building located at the Civic Plaza, next to City Hall. It is open Saturdays from 11am-1pm and on Tuesdays from 5pm-7pm (during the Farmer’s Market).
Yellowknife Book Cellar
Our fantastic locally-owned bookstore!
Gallery on 47th
This is a new-ish store in Yellowknife. They feature fine art from different artists every month, and have some smaller pieces for sale by a variety of artists.
Sutherlands Drugs
This locally pharmacy is a great place to grab any toiletries. They also sell snacks and a selection of locally-made goods.
